In adolescence, somatic transformations play a fundamental role in the organization of the self. Adolescents' attention is focused on the body and it can be said that they are schematic with respect to this ambit. According to the self-discrepancy theory, comparisons to ideal and obligatory standards can lead to self-discrepancies and cause emotional discomfort. The work examines the relationship between type of discrepancy and emotional discomfort connected with gender, appearance and performance, and body-schemas concerning these two physical domains. A sample of 170 adolescents of the two sexes between the ages of 12 and 15 was used in the study. The main results agree partially with the self-discrepancy paradigm. The resulting complex picture of interactions of the different factors is discussed.
