This paper, part of a doctorate of search which examines the work of the Palearo Fratino engineers, analyze the military books of the sixteenth century and in particular the book published in 1564 by G. Maggi and J. Castriotto entitled “Fortificatione delle città”, reference text for the Palearo brothers. This book shows, through a graphical representation based on isometric views, geometric patterns, construction techniques and materials used during the sixteenth century. In this moment of time the military engineers left Renaissance perspective based on the visual pyramid in favor of an axonometric knights (called soldatesca), which cancels the subjectivity of perspective codified by Alberti in favor of an objective representation that allows a full control of the project. The analysis of project designs, the measurements of existing structures and the support of recent research into postmedieval archaeology makes possible a review of the application of military books in the strongholds of Cagliari and Alghero, in the second half of the sixteenth century. The methodology developed in the project of the military engineers (thanks to the measurability of design) also allows to make a virtual reconstruction of the demolished parts due to the implementation of urban plans of nineteenth century.
