Total and dissolved elements were determined in 35 water samples collected at high- and lowdischarge from rivers flowing in a Mediterranean island (Sardinia, Italy). The elements B, Li, Rb, Sr, Ba, Mo and U show small differences between total and dissolved (i.e. in the fraction <0.4 μm) concentrations; their concentrations are higher in summer; they appear related to the intensity of water-rock interaction processes that are enhanced when the contribution of rainwater to the rivers is low. The elements Al, Fe, Pb, Zn, Cd, Co, Ni, Th and REE show higher concentrations in winter, when the flow of rivers increases. These elements show much lower concentrations in the water filtered through 0.015 μm than in the water filtered through 0.4 μm; this might indicate an aqueous transport via adsorption onto very fine particles (e.g. Fe-oxide/hydroxide).
