Abstract

This Paper analyzes some passages of Mahabharata and Ramayana in order to reconstruct Sagaras' story. Once the ocean was dried up by the rsi Agastya: it became an expanse of land, where the sixty thousand Sagara’s sons lost their sacrificial horse. After a long time they dug down to Patala and they found out Kapila, who burned them into ashes. Bhagiratha, one of their descendants by his penances succeeded in bringing down from Heaven the Ganga, who besprinkled Sagaras’ corpses. Then the river refilled the ocean. In these epic texts the ocean is called samudra- when it is waterless and sagara-, after its refilling.
