The study analyzes the syntax of Indicatore Sardo (1832–1852), the most important periodical of the Restoration period in Sardinia. The journal favoured traditional forms of writing: there are still plenty of examples of tmesis, inversions, the insistent use of pronominal enclisis, and constructions that are attributable to the literary language, especially in the articles in the “domestic” section (dealing with cultural issues, local economy, plays, book reviews). On the contrary, a number of innovative elements, also due to foreign influence, are found in the “Foreign” section, and also, to some extent, throughout the text. These range from the use of “siccome”, new uses of verbs (conditional, use of the past tense) to those of nominal forms and a general tendency towards sentence simplification. There are very few examples of syntactic constructions typical of orality, but the use of nouns in apposition, the frequent use of colons, along with the presence of a simple hypotaxis particularly denote an attempt to provide the linearity required by an informative text.
