The Castello District in Cagliari was founded in the thirteenth century by the Pisani. A first expansion of the district takes place a century later under the Aragonese domination of Cagliari starting from 1326. In the early sixteenth century, the changed war strategies define the design of the walls outlining further expansion of the perimeter of the fortified walls. The latest expansions affecting the district are those of the fortifications of the eighteenth century. In the XIX century, with the decay of Cagliari from the roles of military stronghold, the new urban concepts and planning theories lead to the proliferation of various reuse projects that redesign the city in the fringe areas occupied by the military defensive works. Only a few projects were realized and, even today, the relationship areas between the castle district and the city appear unresolved. Recent construction projects are reshaping today these areas: the study aims to create a cognitive planning of the events which have affected the areas between the district of Castello and the other districts of the city, in order to highlight the problems that still afflict the district and its relationship with the city.
