This chapter introduces the basic concepts of Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) measurements. In particular, the definition of synchrophasor is given and compared with the classical phasor concept considering actual PMU operating principles. The real operative conditions and the disturbances that lead to nonpurely linear models of the voltage and current signals in power networks are briefly recalled. Consequently, the dynamic synchrophasor model is introduced and its relevance for the description of dynamic conditions is highlighted. Finally, the definitions of frequency and rate of change of frequency are reported and described in the synchrophasor measurement framework.
