The paper addresses the structural damage to the main buildings of the cities of Reggiolo and Carpi after the primary earthquake shocks of May 2012 in Emilia Romagna (May 20th , 02:03 UTC MI=5.9, 13.18 UTC MI=5.1 and May 29th 07:00 UTC MI=5.8, 10.55 UTC MI=5.3). The damage survey, performed via the simplified methods of special AeDES and MiBAC forms, highlights the varying seismic behaviour of different types of buildings, especially historical ones, and the consequences in terms of costs. Moreover, an analysis of some failure mechanisms activated in Reggiolo enables evaluating the in loco PGA that actually occurred there due to soil effects locally amplifying the seismic signal.
