Objective. To evaluate the nutritional status in a group of elderly subjects and correlate it with comprehensive geriatric assessment. Materials and methods. 113 over-65-year-olds (average age 74.9 ± 6.7 of which 64 [56.6%] female) were examined in their own homes with the following tests and scales: Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Barthel Index of Independence in Activities of Daily modified (ADL-Bartel Index), Instrumental Activity Daily Llife (IADL), Physical Performance Test (PPT), Tinetti Performance-Oriented Mobility Assessment (POMA), Cumulative Illness Rating Scale for Geriatrics (CIRS-G). Results. Of the 113 subjects 79 (69.9%) were well nourished (MNA 26.3 ± 1.3), 33 (29.1%) showed malnutrition risk (MNA 21.7 ± 1.6), and one (0.9%) was malnourished (MNA 16.5) Pearson correlation between MNA and other parameters shows a significant correlation (p ≤ 0.008) with all except for cognitive status. Conclusions. Health status in the elderly is affected by nutritional status; in fact old age involuntary weight loss is responsible for increased mortality risk and functional status decline. MNA is a comprehensive tool conceived for early malnutrition risk identification and is a commonly used nutritional assessment tool. It is clear from our study that malnutrition risk is closely correlated with the presence of depression, inability to perform standardized actions and basic and instrumental daily-life activities, fall risk, co-morbidity – in particular disease severity − the severity and co-morbidity indexes. It follows that, old age malnutrition incidence being high, it is important to routinely assess nutritional status in the elderly.
