The Mahabharata contains 106 popular etymologies of Gods’ names or epithets and others 29 of common nouns. Sometimes common nouns are derived from proper nouns on mythical basis or more often from their actual functions. Therefore the same person obtains as many names as the actions with which he is connected. Gods’ names are explained telling of their origin, of their life episodes or of powers ascribed to them by their faithful.
