The Latin translation of 33 Aesopic fables completed in 1422 by Hermolaus Barbarus Senior (?1410-1471) during his studies at the Guarino Guarini's school represents the oldest dated document known related to the humanistic rediscovery of Greek Aesop. Unpublished until the XX Century, it offers an important evidence for the knowledge of Guarino's didactical methods and the practice of translation in one of the most important Greek school of the time. The critical text is preceded by the "Nota al testo" and by an introduction divided into five chapters describing the Author’s biography, the other humanistic translations of Aesop in XV century, the characteristics of the Epistola Praefatoria, the linguistic and stylistic aspects of the translation and the relations with the Greek original. The critical edition is furnished with a comment note, indices verborum et locorum, index of manuscripts and index of names of persons and geographical names.
