The introduction of African martyrial cults has been too easily attributed by legendary and unreliable traditions to the traslation of corpses and relics that bishops and other ecclesiastics carried out from Africa, when they were exiled in Sardinia together with Fulgentius of Ruspe. This essay, which springs from a review of texts and monumental as well as material evidences, tries to define the main aspects of the phenomenon, from the causes to the consequences on the development of the martyrial devotion, and the itinerary followed by these ‘exiled saints’.
