Abstract

Relationships between archaeology, cultural heritage management and urban planning often expose planners and decision makers to difficulties in re-development action management in historical cities. The ever hanging over conflict between the preservation and the transformation approaches has not solved by recent evolution in historical city re-development process, from restriction to re-use theoretical trend. It seems to be the practice to guide sustainable urban re-development actions according to knowledge based approach. What worth to be preserved? What can be transformed or deleted? The analysis of the singleassets/ urban settlement relationship according to a historic and cultural heritage knowledge project could support this task leading towards reversible actions. The use of GIS could offer a reliable aid in the analysis of the archaeological assets and the historical built heritage within the urban environment. This paper aims to discuss some advancements in the methodological approach to archaeological assets management in urban re-development of historical town and cities, and the description of a GIS oriented systems for archaeological assets and cultural heritage management. The case study of Cagliari Historical City Centre Re-Development Lab-GIS pilot project is proposed together with some issues for further developments.
