Abstract

Recently excavations are bringing to light very important information to know Cagliari during Byzantine Age, starting when it became part of the Eastern Empire after the conquest of Justinian until to the end of the relationship with Byzantium and the birth of four parts (or kingdoms), so called ‘giudicati’. Historical events – as well as in other towns in Sardinia, in particular if along the coast – caused movements of inhabitants and political and religious buildings, that traditional historiography related to Islamic attack. This paper would like to offer some ideas about byzantine Cagliari, after the new discoveries of the archaeological research.
