Although it is well known that the regular practice of sports improves the efficiency of the immune system, the studies performed on sport immunology are not easily comparable because of the different types of exercise (acute, prolonged, training season, etc.) and different sports (running, cycling, swimming, football etc.) examined. Similarly, the methods used in such studies are extremely variable ranging from the simple evaluation of leukocyte counts to evaluation of the lymphocyte subpopulations; and from their response to mitogens to the study of cytokine production. The aim of this study was to determine variations in cytokine-producing cells in professional athletes throughout a training season, and the clinical effects of these variations on allergic disorders.
