The present essay examines the reception of Giovanni Gabrieli in the writings of Gian Francesco Malipiero, Bruno Maderna and Luigi Nono, together with accessible documentation regarding their compositional, editorial, concert and recording activities. Contrary to well consolidated opinions on the New Venetian School, the approaches of these three composers reflect neither linear nor “genealogical” patterns but, on the contrary, their own personal itineraries.

Abstract

The present essay examines the reception of Giovanni Gabrieli in the writings of Gian Francesco Malipiero, Bruno Maderna and Luigi Nono, together with accessible documentation regarding their compositional, editorial, concert and recording activities. Contrary to well consolidated opinions on the New Venetian School, the approaches of these three composers reflect neither linear nor “genealogical” patterns but, on the contrary, their own personal itineraries.
