The travel memoirs of Max Leopold Wagner, found in “Immagini di viaggio dalla Sardegna”, certainly cannot be considered the only decisive documentary source for the historical reconstruction of the fortified heritage; however, they represent a significant contribution to be read in parallel with the other numerous descriptions of travelers who visited Sardinia at the time, with the more traditional archival and iconographic sources available. Indeed, his writings, a precious tribute to Sardinia, in addition to reconstructing the framework of the Sardinian linguistic phenomena, are an important testimony to the Sardinian territory of the early 20th century, highlighting the uniqueness of the landscape and its historical building heritage. As well as the special attention given to the housing typologies, the reflections of Wagner offer a very interesting contribution in the analysis of Sardinian fortifications, with specific reference to their condition at the beginning of the last century, including descriptions of landscapes and anecdotal references.
