This chapter investigates the question of representation in historical knowledge, following a dialectical line that, somehow, connects von Wright, H. White and Ankersmit to M. de Certeau and P. Ricoeur. Following a specific perspective, which is placed between epistemology and hermeneutics, it explores the procedural mechanism of representation as a mechanism of memory and, at the same time, as an instrument of knowledge.
