This contribution is part of an ongoing research aiming to detect what memories of Italy’s ethnic space have been preserved in the present-day Italian-American communities of New York. The choice of the city has been made with respect to the symbolic nature of New York, to the much celebrated history of ‘the’ immigrants’ city, the first American shore the Italian community saw and touched of the promised land . Yet, this choice has also been made because of the urban symbols of the Italian-American communities still very much visible in New York, from Manhattan’s Little Italy to Brooklyn’s Bensonhurst, symbols which limit not only the Italian-American urban space, but also somehow its language space. As we well know, visual symbols are important factors in stimulating our memories.
