Trump. Un "puritano" alla Casa Bianca

Almost all journalists, political scientists, sociologists and pollsters thought that Trump would never win the 2016 presidential election. Where did they get this belief? From the fact that he was sexist, xenophobic and rejected politically correct; because he wanted to finish building the wall between USA and Mexico; for his paranoid conspiracy; because he claimed American isolationism in foreign policy. Actually, all the statements made by Trump during the electoral campaign were perfectly consistent with some cultural-puritan archetypes, based on the control of space, that have always structured American culture: defense from external attacks, expulsion of the enemy, return home, cataloging of space according to the typology of its inhabitants, the executioner who cleans the space of evil, the refusal of a central power. But, unlike the puritanism of former presidents like Bush and Reagan, Trump's has lost all religious connotations, assuming the appearance of a mental and cultural attitude aimed at the mere control and governance of space, both physical and virtual. The book tries to understand why this paranoid and inquisitive puritanism, which seemed to have been defeated by history and definitively cornered by the Obama presidency, has returned to the center of the American political scene thanks to the election of Trump.

La quasi totalità dei dei sondaggisti pensava che Trump non avrebbe mai potuto vincere. Perché è sessista e xenofobo e rifiuta il politicamente corretto? Perché vuole terminare la costruzione del muro tra Stati Uniti e Messico? Perché è un bugiardo e un evasore fiscale? In realtà tutte le affermazioni di Trump in campagna elettorale sono perfettamente coerenti con alcuni archetipi culturali di origine puritana che da sempre reggono l'immaginario americano e che si fondano sul controllo dello spazio: la difesa da attacchi esterni, il giustiziere che ripulisce lo spazio dal male e lo rende omogeneo. Il libro vuole provare a capire perché questo puritanesimo poliziesco, paranoico e inquisitorio, che sembrava essere stato sconfitto dalla storia e definitivamente messo all'angolo dalla presidenza Obama, sia tornato al centro della scena politica riuscendo addirittura a conquistare la Casa Bianca.
