Introduction

The purpose of this study is the identification and reconstruction of the common thread linking the two Aragonese kingdoms of Sardinia and Valencia, and in particular the two cities of Cagliari and Valencia, both of which were the seats of viceroys and Mediterranean ports – through the governance of some viceroys ruling in both kingdoms during the Baroque period. The splitting of the publication into three parts – the first of a historical-institutional nature, the second related to the representation of power and the third focused on a real case of artistic patronage – makes it possible to identify three areas of investigation.

Oggetto dell' indagine vuol essere l’individuazione e la ricostruzione del fil rouge che lega i due regni aragonesi di Sardegna e Valenza e, in particolare, le due città di Cagliari e di Valenza - entrambe sedi viceregie e porti mediterranei - attraverso l’esperienza di governo di alcuni viceré che governarono in entrambi i regni nel corso dell’età barocca. La suddivisione del volume in tre parti - la prima dal taglio storico-istituzionale, la seconda relativa alla rappresentazione del potere, la terza incentrata su un caso concreto di patronage artistico - consente di distinguere tre differenti ambiti di indagine.
