This book is the result of the joint work of two art historians. It is an artistic–historical, wide ranging synthesis of the Sardinian artistic silver works, from the Middle Ages to the first years of the XIX century. It also examines the influence by importation models and it is the result of a wide research in Sardinian archives. The study of papers shows an extensive diffusion of silver manufactures and of their use in ecclesiastical environment and in various social classes. Moreover it is evident the role of clients in the making of the most important works. Sardinian productions of silver works of art is part of a wide scope of cultural influence and trade in the Mediterranean area and in Europe. From an analysis of a large remaining production it is possible to notice stylistic influences from the Iberian area, Provence, Northern Europe and from several Italian regions, such as: Piedmont, Tuscany, Latium, Campania and Sicily. Such variety of artistic expressions is due to political and economic relations, import and to an active and stimulating work of foreign craftsmen, from the above-named areas, working in Sardinia. With his broad range of iconographic topics, this book intends to fill a historiographic gap and to present a clear and accessible classification of silver products made in Sardinia, classified into periods, authors, styles and typologies. This volume addresses to scholars, collectors, antique dealers and lovers of art.
