The problem of designing the estimation model to infer the effluent compositions in a multicomponent distillation column with temperature measurements is addressed within the adjustable-structure GE framework. On the basis of the per-component SS temperature gradient diagram associated with the column detectability property, a simplified model is drawn, leading to a simpler online estimation algorithm. This approach is applied through simulations to an industrial-type six-component column, finding that the estimation task can be performed with much less (57) ODEs compared to the standard three (2849 ODEs) and six (17390 ODEs) component EKFs.

Abstract

The problem of designing the estimation model to infer the effluent compositions in a multicomponent distillation column with temperature measurements is addressed within the adjustable-structure GE framework. On the basis of the per-component SS temperature gradient diagram associated with the column detectability property, a simplified model is drawn, leading to a simpler online estimation algorithm. This approach is applied through simulations to an industrial-type six-component column, finding that the estimation task can be performed with much less (57) ODEs compared to the standard three (2849 ODEs) and six (17390 ODEs) component EKFs.
