The present lexical study is focused on the terms for fruits, roots and flowers occurring in Kalidasa's works, which are homophonous with the names of the plants producing them. This "homophony" is described in A IV.3.166 as a zero-replacement of the taddhita-affix for deriving the name of the plum fruit (jambu-) from the name of the plant (the tree jambu-) of which it is a "modification" or a "part". The commentaries - some more recent than Kalidasa - extend the rule to some flowers and roots. The aim of this research is to enquire into the classical poetic language, to test the application of these grammatical rules, considering whether they merely reflect the contemporary common language or rather whether they should be classified as poetical and rhetorical devices .

Abstract
The present lexical study is focused on the terms for fruits, roots and flowers occurring in Kalidasa's works, which are homophonous with the names of the plants producing them. This "homophony" is described in A IV.3.166 as a zero-replacement of the taddhita-affix for deriving the name of the plum fruit (jambu-) from the name of the plant (the tree jambu-) of which it is a "modification" or a "part". The commentaries - some more recent than Kalidasa - extend the rule to some flowers and roots. The aim of this research is to enquire into the classical poetic language, to test the application of these grammatical rules, considering whether they merely reflect the contemporary common language or rather whether they should be classified as poetical and rhetorical devices .I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
