The article deals with plays-within-the-play embedded in A Jovial Crew by Richard Brome and its twentieth century rewriting by Jeffreys. It demonstrates that conflicting discourses construct the former, while the latter reuses old materials in order to speak about English contemporary politics and policy. In so doing, they both reflect on different ways of fashioning reality into History. The plot and the verbal exchanges among characters decree the victory of competing discourses.

Abstract
The article deals with plays-within-the-play embedded in A Jovial Crew by Richard Brome and its twentieth century rewriting by Jeffreys. It demonstrates that conflicting discourses construct the former, while the latter reuses old materials in order to speak about English contemporary politics and policy. In so doing, they both reflect on different ways of fashioning reality into History. The plot and the verbal exchanges among characters decree the victory of competing discourses.File in questo prodotto:
