The objective of this article is to trace the principal tenets of education among the early Quakers through a linguistic and rhetorical investigation of select texts written by George Fox and Humphry Smith. Fox is regarded as the acknowledged founder and leader of the movement, while Smith was one of the earliest preachers and was persecuted due to his activism. The data presented in this article have been situated historically in relation to other studies, particularly those that have shed light on the role of Quaker printing presses and book distribution within Quaker communities. The analysis revealed the remarkable innovativeness of the educational methods and principles employed, with a notable emphasis on the interrelationship between silence and speech, reading and meditation. These elements were utilized with the objective of defining oneself as an alternative individual and group.
