This essay offers an anthropological point of view to demographic crisis in the European rural areas since the Nineteenth century. It consists in rethinking community notion and seeing in a different kind the emptying of human presence in internal Sardinia and in other similar regions. Nevertheless the adaptation processes due to modernity and to depopulation let to outcrop some widening life and mobility horizons and allow to view other virtual communities, those broken out by emigration in Italy and Europe but living and able to find social, moral and ideological links with all the little depopulated South Europe villages.
