The essay, which is the introduction to the republication of the Dizionario Etimologico Sardo, vols. I-II, Heidelberg 1960-62, Carl Winter-Universitätsverlag, describes Max Leopold Wagner’s etymological method and the role of this important republished work in the comprehension of the historical development of the Sardinian lexicon within Romance languages. The work demonstrates the evolution that characterized the configuration of etymological studies, also by proposing several solutions to several unresolved questions in M.L. Wagner’s study.
