Appendicitis, inflammation of the appendix, is the most common acute surgical disease affecting young people. Although it can affect infants and the elderly, it generally becomes manifest in young, otherwise healthy individuals. It can pose a diagnostic dilemma since many other abdominal processes can mimic the findings. With prompt diagnosis and treatment, the morbidity and mortality of appendicitis have been greatly reduced in the past century.
