Abstract

“Hospital city” is a research project and a teaching experience addressing the reuse of the San Giovanni di Dio historic hospital in Cagliari, based on an interdisciplinary approach between Architectural and Urban Design and Restoration. The old hospital is a monument and an innovative work, both in design and functional terms, conceived by the neoclassical architect Gaetano Cima. Since 2000 it has been subjected to the progressive transfer of numerous departments to a new general hospital, slipping silently into a state of suspension and now waiting to be returned to the city and to its citizens.
