The book is a contribution to the studies which, approaching the subjects related to the byological life cycle (pregnancy, delivery, birth) from an hystorical, anthropological and sociological point of view, enphasize their deep cultural connotation. In most part of the Sardinian villages, at the end of XIX century, the handling of the birth was still traditional, with a supporting group of married women and the traditional midwife as the only expert person. In that period a new government policy was starting to grow in Sardinia as well as it was started in other places in the 1700. It was attentive to the morbidity and to the mortality of the population and to the demographic increase, focused on protecting and, at the same time, on checking the pregnancy and the birth for public security. In that period the first schools for midwives were created and the laws to protect the pregnancy and the birth as well. The free care for poor pregnant women were also created and the laws about the control of the profession as well. The book, based on Archives sources (documents of the State Central Archive, documents of the State Archive of Cagliari and Sassari, of the diocesan Archive and of some local Archives were looked through) rebuilds the story of the passage from the traditional assistance to the medicalized one (at home with the graduate midwife), following events of local story that often apply in a contradictory way the official dispositions. In those events the physicians have an ambiguous position, and in particular conflicts are highlighted, but also adaptations and syncretisms between traditional midwives and the gradauted ones.
