Space plays a pivotal role in Ian McEwan's fiction: houses, hotels, hospitals and gardens represent a recurring motif and intervene as an active device capable of orienting the behaviour of the characters and determining the outcomes of the plots. This volume examines McEwan's novels starting from the triple function played by spaces (the attantial, metonymic and metatextual functions) – and suggests intersections and juxtapositions among his works based on the theoretical reflection on heterotopias elaborated by Michel Foucault. The investigation will focus on the constant theme of the family with the aim of highlighting the different meanings acquired by the intergenerational dialectic and intrafamilial dynamics.

Abstract
Space plays a pivotal role in Ian McEwan's fiction: houses, hotels, hospitals and gardens represent a recurring motif and intervene as an active device capable of orienting the behaviour of the characters and determining the outcomes of the plots. This volume examines McEwan's novels starting from the triple function played by spaces (the attantial, metonymic and metatextual functions) – and suggests intersections and juxtapositions among his works based on the theoretical reflection on heterotopias elaborated by Michel Foucault. The investigation will focus on the constant theme of the family with the aim of highlighting the different meanings acquired by the intergenerational dialectic and intrafamilial dynamics.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
