This paper traces the topographical and urbanistic history of the ancient Carales during late antiquity and early medieval age, focusing on the “movement” of the inhabitants and the places of power after historical events. The city, born along the coast of the lagoon of Santa Gilla in the Phoenician period, moved to east in Roman Age, but came back to the first site during the Middle Age, under the government of the “Giudici”. The different aspects of an urban center with a long and uninterrupted life are for Carales more difficult to understand and to know because of its continuous movement. It is very important to put in evidence the presence as well the absence in order to understand and let other people understand the real meaning of its history.

Abstract
This paper traces the topographical and urbanistic history of the ancient Carales during late antiquity and early medieval age, focusing on the “movement” of the inhabitants and the places of power after historical events. The city, born along the coast of the lagoon of Santa Gilla in the Phoenician period, moved to east in Roman Age, but came back to the first site during the Middle Age, under the government of the “Giudici”. The different aspects of an urban center with a long and uninterrupted life are for Carales more difficult to understand and to know because of its continuous movement. It is very important to put in evidence the presence as well the absence in order to understand and let other people understand the real meaning of its history.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
