The expression that Marx, in Zur Kritik der Hegelschen Rechtsphilosophie, used to define Hegel's philosophy is well-known: “logical, pantheistic mysticism”. A couple of years later, Marx contrasted the “nocturnal flight” of philosophy with the famous eleventh thesis on Feuerbach. The question I ask myself is the following: really Hegel's philosophy, especially that expressed in Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts, is an apologetic philosophy? We know that the young Marx saw the face of democracy precisely in the absence of “mediation" — a direct (Athenian) community of producers animated by universal suffrage. Hence the critique of Hegel's reductio ad unum in the monarchy. Nevertheless, is it not, that of Hegel, a realistic gaze at his time (and beyond)? The recognition of a political system capable of unifying the various components of society precisely through the system of mediation? Is not the lack of mediation exactly what our democracies suffer from today?
