Abstract

According to recent data collected by SSEO (Sardinia Socio-Economic Observatory), one-fifth of the Italian archaeological areas and parks is located in Sardinia. In particular, the Sardinian prehistoric field is one of the most significant expressions of the island, where majestic and suggestive stone architectures represent the most extraordinary manifestations in terms of number and magnificence within the Mediterranean basin. Currently inserted in the UNESCO Tentative List (November 2021) to potentially achieve the application as World Heritage Site, nuragic architecture is a founding act metaphor that reveals a way of creating places based on a universal rhythm and an unconventional concept of space and time. Since its origins, it has had a stereotomic and elementary character with the ground and, at the same time, a rooting sense, a strong connection between matter and form of the project, and, consequently, between time and memory. Concatenated volumes, interstices and meanders, arcane voids, and cuts of light shape the spatial figure of these architectures. Nuragic architecture is a symbolic form of art that introduces a dimension of distilled time due to the capacity of emptiness to inhabit the matter. These are resistant matters which allow an atemporal and ahistorical interpretation of these architectures without architects and refer to the past as a constant place of knowledge and learning.
