The present paper analyzes the proposal, most recently put forth by the Secretary General in his report “Our Common Agenda”, to repurpose the UN Trusteeship Council to make it the forum where future generations (or, at least, their interests) are given voice. To this end, it will dwell on the notion of “future generations” and on the values and goods that it is aimed to further. Then, some institutional options to embed them in the UN system through the reform of the Trusteeship Council will be examined.

Abstract

The present paper analyzes the proposal, most recently put forth by the Secretary General in his report “Our Common Agenda”, to repurpose the UN Trusteeship Council to make it the forum where future generations (or, at least, their interests) are given voice. To this end, it will dwell on the notion of “future generations” and on the values and goods that it is aimed to further. Then, some institutional options to embed them in the UN system through the reform of the Trusteeship Council will be examined.
