When designing a road, an intersection, an urban space, usually it does not ask to itself if what you are designing will be enjoyed by all road users (including the elderly, disabled, children, pregnant women, etc.). In Italy, legislation on the road design does not give any indication as. Walking through the streets with a critical eye it is possible to view, for instance, as the ramps often lack. Besides when it comes to road safety, the point of view of disabled is not considered. It is strange that despite the objective difficulties that disabled people run into on the road, the number of these connected with road accidents is very low. From this consideration was born on the research presented in the article. At first we wanted to understand why there are few disabled people on the streets of the city. It has decided to contact the major associations that are in close contact with them. It appeared that most of disabled goes out very little in the streets. The main reason is the perception of a low level of security and safety that accompanies the lack of usability. The aim of the research work was therefore to understand: what are the main problems encountered by the disabled, the obstacles that make a path like unsafe or unsecure so as to identify which items make preferred a path to another. To do this, a questionnaire was distributed. Processing of it allows to understand main design specifications that make a street usable by all users, in particular way by disabled. For example, it is emerged as roundabouts widespread in recent years because safer than signalized intersections for example, constitute an insurmountable barrier for the blind. The aim of the research work is to establish guidelines for road design that takes into account the needs of disabled people. In this regard it is noted that roads usable by people with disabilities become usable by all users, including elderly, children, etc. An important part in the research work is elaboration of the collected data from the information obtained from the questionnaire. In many cases, has emerged as little solutions are enough to make a path accessible by everyone. The objectives of this research are: to analyze the urban area of the city of Cagliari (an Italian city), identify the causes of inaccessibility linked to a deficiency in the design, setting priorities for actions in order to solve existing problems and write the guidelines for future designs. This paper reports the results of the first part of a research that is being develop at the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment, University of Cagliari.
