The analysis of communication in prison highlights the dynamics related to the socialization processes of foreign inmates, with deep work on the negotiation of meanings and the creation of new identities of individuals, which are also shaped through language uses. Foreign detainees use the many languages and dialects that make up their repertoire according to the different dimensions of communication and the identity “labels” they wish to self-attribute in their interactions with interlocutors (Benucci, Grosso, 2015, 2016, 2017; Benucci, 2017), through continuous and changing “narrative placements” (Bamberg 1997; 2005). In this paper, we report data arising from the qualitative analysis of a sample of interviews conducted with foreign prisoners partly drawn from the corpora of the DEPORT and RiUscire projects, and partly drawn from the collected life stories of sociologist Doriano Saracino (2017). In particular, the use of qualitative methods and specifically discourse analysis in relation to the social context examined brought out common threads in the life histories of the detainees: the path of learning (or the failure or delayed learning) of the L2, the increase of different linguistic-cultural identities, evaluations of expectations towards Italy, and communicative and interactional choices that emerged from the uses of different linguistic repertoires.
