The article presents prahasana - a genre of Sanskrit drama, sometimes known as Sanskrit comedy. It begins with a discussion on different conceptions of the origin of Sanskrit drama. There is also a summary of other major genres of Sanskrit drama. In next part, the article presents definitions of prahasana found in various Sanskrit theoretical treatises. The last part concentrates on the discussion of pra- hasanas originating from different periods of time. It also examines the changes that have occurred in this genre over the centuries and provides examples of plays with short plot summaries.
