The paper focuses on the ephemeral setting up of public space during ducal celebrations in Milan under Sforza rule. Fifteenth-century political stability fostered renewed economic growth, thereby enabling investments devoted to the legitimization of government through festivals and celebrations. The Court, itself a place of cultural and political production now, further perpetuated the promotion of the Duchy’s image. Ducal feasts, an integral part of courtly life, permeate the urban environment, investing the streets of relational charge between Duke and citizens. This paper analyses the rituality and urban sequence of the feast, outlining the ceremonial configurations and the interplay between its static and dynamic moments. On the occasion of the ducal festivities, the city becomes an ephemeral theater and is transversally set up as an urban scenography, composed of wooden structures, vegetation and textile elements. The active participation of citizens in the staging of urban space is highlighted as a demonstration of widespread involvement. The temporary apparatuses become a medium through which the Duke communicates his power, transforming the city into a tangible expression of Sforza power.

Abstract
The temporary apparatuses become a medium through which the Duke communicates his power, transforming the city into a tangible expression of Sforza power.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
