The aim of this Special Issue is to offer insights into how transparency is crafted and promoted in corporate and institutional communication by tackling some key questions: how is transparency encoded through lexical, discursive, pragmatic, and multimodal features? Which new disclosure genres are emerging and how are their channels of distribution changing as a result of advances in digital technology? Are there trends within specific sectors of communication? Are there trends linked to different national cultures? What is the role of English in conveying transparency in cross-cultural or intercultural contexts? To what extent do organizations go beyond normative requirements to further enhance an image of transparency? How can transparency be hindered? The 11 contributions in the Special Issue collectively address the above questions in various ways. They span across various sectors that impact the lives of millions of people around the world: energy, transport, fashion, and the media. These sectors intersect with several key challenges facing modern society, including the environment, the health and safety of citizens, working conditions, and the trustworthiness of information. They therefore reflect discourse domains in which the perception of transparency is of paramount importance. In particular, the papers in this Special Issue are concerned with how transparency emerges (or fails to emerge) across a range of genres, including annual and CSR reports and website communications, as well as social media posts whose very presence on corporate websites may signal a heightened effort to convey an image of transparency. How institutions face the growing demand for transparency is investigated in media interviews within the area of international diplomacy. The authors of the contributions implement a variety of methodological approaches (i.e. corpus-assisted discourse analysis, genre analysis, systemic functional linguistics, critical discourse analysis, multimodal genre analysis, multimodal critical discourse analysis, netnography), thus providing a multifaceted profile of the linguistic and extra-linguistic expression of transparency.
