If Italo Calvino had pursued his high school dreams, when he nurtured the ambition of becoming a satirical cartoonist, we might be able to measure his talent as a cartoonist more accurately. Instead, the great storyteller left us only a handful of drawings, signed under the pseudonym Jago and published in 1940 in “Bertoldo.” The unfortunate circumstance does not prevent us from discerning, in a significant part of his production, an aptitude that goes far beyond refined expertise in the subject matter. Here we mean that propensity to conceive of short stories from a generative image for the thrust of which the narrative is set up as a dynamic chain of sequential images.
Se Italo Calvino avesse dato corso ai suoi sogni liceali, quando coltivava l’ambizione di diventare un disegnatore satirico, saremmo forse in grado di misurare con maggiore precisione il suo talento di fumettista. Invece il grande narratore ci ha lasciato solo una manciata di disegni, firmati con lo pseudonimo Jago e pubblicati nel 1940 sul “Bertoldo". La circostanza sfavorevole non impedisce di ravvisare, in una parte significativa della sua produzione, un’attitudine che va ben oltre la raffinata competenza in materia. Qui si intende quella propensione a concepire le short stories a partire da un’immagine generativa per l’abbrivio della quale la narrazione viene allestita come una catena dinamica di immagini in sequenza.
