This essay analyzes how the historical memory of Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman in the United States Congress, and the first woman and black person to be a candidate for the Democratic Party presidential primaries, is being recovered. Two works will be considered: the 2020 miniseries Mrs. America, which deals with the attempt to introduce equality between sexes in the Constitution; and the 2024 movie Shirley, which tells the story of her campaign for the presidential primaries.
