In the present paper, the main results of the COAST BEST project “CO-ordinated Approach for Sediment Treatment and BEneficial reuse in Small harbours networks” funded in the framework of the LIFE+ 08 Environment European call, are reported. Dredged sediments from four small harbors of the Emilia Romagna Region in the northern part of the Adriatic Italian coast were investigated in the present work. In particular, lab-scale separation and treatment was applied to various sediment samples with the purpose of sand recovery for reuse in beach nourishment applications. The experimental results are reported in terms of both mass balance and quality of the separated fractions (grain size distribution, content of organic and inorganic pollutants, aesthetic properties). On the basis of the lab-scale results, a flexible process layout accommodating the variations in sediment composition was developed and scaled up to a demonstration plant for sediment treatment that has recently been installed in a pilot area.
