Abstract

The analysis of the archaic marble sarcophagus discovered in 1996 at Gümüşçay and of its decoration – above all the sympotic scene – is the starting point to discuss again of the female social position in archaic Greece. Archaeological and literary evidence, not only from Athens but also from Asia Minor and the East, are considered. The final picture is much more interesting than common opinion thinks.
