In 2009 a parallelepiped sandstone cippus with a Punic inscription was recovered from the southern necropolis of Tharros. The cippus, which belongs to a type not previously documented in Tharros, was found reused in a context of the Roman period. The five-line inscription mentions the deceased (with his genealogy) who is defined as a shofet, a political office already attested in Tharros. The publication of the cippus is accompanied by a review of the relevant archaeological and epigraphic data currently known to us from Tharros, with particular reference to nineteenth-century literature.

Abstract
In 2009 a parallelepiped sandstone cippus with a Punic inscription was recovered from the southern necropolis of Tharros. The cippus, which belongs to a type not previously documented in Tharros, was found reused in a context of the Roman period. The five-line inscription mentions the deceased (with his genealogy) who is defined as a shofet, a political office already attested in Tharros. The publication of the cippus is accompanied by a review of the relevant archaeological and epigraphic data currently known to us from Tharros, with particular reference to nineteenth-century literature.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
