The history of the Iranian community in Istanbul is strictly connected with that of the Valide Han, the largest urban caravanserai of the whole city, built in the 17th century within the commercial heart of the city, North of the Grand Bazaar, which would have become the headquarter of the Iranian constitutionalist movement in the second half of the 19th century. This chapter aims at analysing both the history of the creation of this unique structure and the social role of the building in the urban area of Istanbul since the 19th century, evidencing the role of the Persian community in its affirmation as one of the most important Khans of the Ottoman capital.

Abstract

The history of the Iranian community in Istanbul is strictly connected with that of the Valide Han, the largest urban caravanserai of the whole city, built in the 17th century within the commercial heart of the city, North of the Grand Bazaar, which would have become the headquarter of the Iranian constitutionalist movement in the second half of the 19th century. This chapter aims at analysing both the history of the creation of this unique structure and the social role of the building in the urban area of Istanbul since the 19th century, evidencing the role of the Persian community in its affirmation as one of the most important Khans of the Ottoman capital.
