Innsbruck, capital of Tirol an Austrian federal state bordering with Italy, always had important political and diplomatic relations to Italy in the twentieth century, above all for the South Tirol question. It began at the dawn of the century, for the dramatically failed attempt to found an Italian Language University for the Italian-speaking citizens of the Habsburg Empire. This project excited and involved the Italian and Austrian public opinions increasing their opposite nationalisms and played a significant role both in the Italian internal policy and toward the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
