The role played by children in the context of ritual practices has an importance that goes beyond that of mere background actors. This is the case also in the context of the rituals celebrated in Asia Minor in the HellenisticŔRoman times in honour of Hecate in her sanctuary in Lagina, as well as those that take place for the goddess in association with Zeus in the neighbouring Stratonicea. The epigraphic sources point out that on both occasions children chosen from the best families were recruited to sing hymns addressed to Zeus and Hecate. This is not surprising given the importance that the kourotrophic function plays within the powers of the goddess, for which both the literary and archaeological sources repeatedly emphasize the connection with incidents relating to the birth and growth of children.
