Between URBAN And RURAL. This book presents the results of a collaboration project between several territorial government institutions and local administrations, in particular the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and the municipalities of Ales, Morgongiori and Pau, and higher education and university research institutions, in particular the Faculty of Architecture and the Department of Architecture of the University of Cagliari. The debate focuses on the issue of a quality project for the outlying areas of rural settlements in inland Sardinia. In recent decades urban expansion around these sites has severed the historical bond and continuity between these old centres and the territory, a bond that contributed to Sardinia’s extraordinary rural landscape. one major objective of the research programme is the joint elaboration by local communities, public administrations and the university, of the basic information required for the project. The international planning and design workshops carried out in this region were participated by schools of architecture as well as professors and students from several foreign countries; the workshops were an interesting tool to identify issues and problems that might help rethink these settlements starting from the fringes, in other words the “no man’s land” around consolidated historical centres and the countryside.Within this reference framework, the book illustrates the International Design Workshop ARCILAB09 habitat between urban and rural. The workshop was organized in 2009 by the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Cagliari and the Municipalities of Ales, Morgongiori and Pau, and sponsored by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia with the participation of over seventy students from European and Latin American Schools of Architecture.
